The Election of 1800 Essay - 1006 Words
The election of 1800 was a fight between the democratic-republicans and the federalists party for presidency. Due to Alexander Hamiltons help and persuasion by choosing Thomas Jefferson as the lesser of two evils, the House of Representatives elected Thomas Jefferson as president and Aaron Burr as vice president. As a result of the 1800 election, the Congress and the states passed the Twelfth Amendment in 1804 separating the ballots for the president and for the vice president to prevent the same crisis in the future. Intel Corp. 4. Microsoft Corporation 5. Climate Change Economics
Question: Discuss about theClimate Change Economics. Answer: 1. Humans are responsible for the change in the climate and the influence of the human on the climate system is clear. The influences of the humans are identified in warming of the atmosphere and the ocean. The humans are also responsible for bringing changes in the global water cycle as well as reduction in snow and ice. The activities of the human beings results in the release of the greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide (Archer 2016). The evidence is that the continuous emission of the greenhouse gas that led to the further warming and changes in all components of the climate system. 2. The observed changes are the warming of the climate system, which resulted in the increase in the sea level, and the warming up of the atmosphere. 3. The scientist expects that the concentration of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is likely to increase in the future. This will be mainly due to the high dependency of the human beings on fossil fuels. The scientists also expected a global average warming of around 4.5à ¢Ã¢â¬ââ⬠¹C by the year 2100 (Keenan et al. 2013). 4. The changes in the climate will intensely affect the human societies as well as the natural environment. The impact of the climate change in both Australia and other parts of the world are much clear. The climatic changes will result in the increase in the temperatures as well as the harshness of heat waves. These will on turn result in the changes in the growth and distribution of the plants and animals. Oedipus Rex Essays (338 words) - Oedipus The King, Oedipus, Operas
Oedipus Rex Characters in the play Oedipus the King attempt to block the horrible outcome of the gods' oracle. The first people to do so were Oedipus' mother and father, Laius and Jocasta. After hearing the unmoral and disruptive prediction, they attempted to execute their own child. Their belief in the gods was this strong. Resulting in their actions, Oedipus grew up thinking that the king and queen of Corinth were his parents. After Oedipus, himself, went to Apollo to hear his oracle he left Corinth thinking he were to do these deeds to the people he thought of to be his parents. In return, his actual parents, Laius and Jocasta doomed themselves. Oedipus' attempt to run from his prophecy ended up condemning himself and his parents. Characters attempt to change the fate, when they already know Oedipus' inevitable destiny. The characters in this play feel that they, for some reason, have the powers to play with the gods. If the gods' gave an unpleasant oracle, it did not matter, what the gods said went. These people did not like what they heard, but decided to work against the gods. They thought they could out do them, by sacrificing their only child. They tried simply because they did not want this unbearable fate to come true. Who would want to be ended by their own kin? There can not really be a conflict between Oedipus and Fate. His fate was predetermined, which means he could have done nothing about it, he had no choice. Oedipus may try to fight it or beat it, but it is his destiny and bound to happen. He and his parents, may have thought they could have done something to prevent the predicted of becoming reality, but they had no chance. In a way, there was a struggle, but it was Oedipus against an indestructible force which would not be budged. He was born with his fate, and it was not going to be changed, for any reason. Chicago Referencing â⬠Citing a Conference Paper (Footnotes)
Chicago Referencing ââ¬â Citing a Conference Paper (Footnotes) Chicago Referencing ââ¬â Citing a Conference Paper (Footnotes) Conference proceedings are a great resource for students. And since academics attend conferences to discuss cutting-edge research, proceedings often include exciting new ideas. But how do you cite a conference paper? In this post, we explain this using Chicago footnote referencing. Footnote Citations In Chicago referencing, always give full publication information in the first footnote citation. For a published conference paper, this includes: n. Authorââ¬â¢s Name, ââ¬Å"Paper Title,â⬠in Title of Proceedings, ed. Editor Name(s) (Place of Publication: Publisher, Year), page number(s) for cited section. In practice, then, the first citation of a conference paper would look like this: 1. Bill Riker, ââ¬Å"Innovations in Seating,â⬠in Proceedings of the Third Annual Behavioral Adaptations for Interstellar Travel Conference, ed. Jonathan Frakes (Santa Monica, CA: TNG Inc., 1987), 184. The format differs slightly for an unpublished paper (e.g., one that you saw presented in person). This is quite rare, but if you need to cite one, you need to include the following information in the first footnote: n. Authorââ¬â¢s Name, ââ¬Å"Paper Titleâ⬠(paper presented at Name, Location and Date of Conference), page numbers (if relevant). An unpublished paper would therefore be presented like this: 2. Deanna Troi, ââ¬Å"Feeling Change: Design Guided by Empathyâ⬠(paper presented at The International Conference of Feeling, UCLA, Los Angeles, California, June 20-22 1992, 21. For repeat citations of a paper, you can use a shortened footnote format. Bibliography The information to include in your bibliography for a conference paper is roughly the same as in the first footnote. However, there are a few differences. For a published paper, the format is: Surname, First Name. ââ¬Å"Paper Title.â⬠In Title of Proceedings, edited by Editor Name(s), page range. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year. For an unpublished conference paper, meanwhile, the format is: Surname, First Name. ââ¬Å"Paper Title.â⬠Paper presented at Name, Location and Date of Conference. In practice, then, we would list a published and an unpublished conference paper as follows: Riker, Bill. ââ¬Å"Innovations in Seating.â⬠In Proceedings of the Third Annual Behavioral Adaptations for Interstellar Travel Conference, edited by Jonathan Frakes, 180-201. Santa Monica, CA: TNG Inc., 1987. Troi, Deanna. ââ¬Å"Feeling Change: Design Guided by Empathy.â⬠Paper presented at The International Conference of Feeling, UCLA, Los Angeles, California, June 20-22 1992.

Animal Welfare to Animal Rights Spectrum
Animal Welfare to Animal Rights Spectrum Although animal rights and animal welfare frequently fall on the same side of an issue, there is a fundamental difference between the two ideologies: the right of humans to use animals. The Right to Use Animals One of the basic tenets of animal rights is that humans do not have a right to use non-human animals for our own purposes, which include food, clothing, entertainment, and vivisection. This is based on a rejection of speciesism and the knowledge that animals are sentient beings. There are many who believe that humans do have a right to use animals for some purposes, but believe that animals should be treated better. This position is the animal welfare position. Example of Farmed Animals While the animal rights position seeks the elimination of the use of animals, the animal welfare position seeks more humane conditions for the animals. The difference between these two positions can be seen as applied to an issue like farmed animals. While the animal rights position would hold that humans do not have the right to slaughter and eat animals, the animal welfare position would be that the animals should be treated humanely before and during slaughter. The animal welfare position would not object to the consumption of animals but would seek the elimination of cruel factory farming practices such as confining calves in veal crates, confining pregnant sows in gestational stalls, and debeaking chickens. Animal rights advocates also oppose these cruel practices but seek to eliminate the consumption of animals and animal products. Unacceptable Uses To most supporters of the animal welfare position, some uses of animals are unacceptable because the human benefit is minimal compared to the amount of animal suffering involved. These usually include uses like fur, cosmetics testing, canned hunting, and dogfighting. On these issues, both the animal rights position and animal welfare position would call for the elimination of these uses of animals. Animal Issues Spectrum Like many other issues, there is a wide variety of positions on animal issues. One can imagine a spectrum with animal rights at one end, animal welfare in the middle, and the belief that animals do not deserve any moral consideration on the other end. Many people may find that their views do not fit completely in one box or the other or may find that their positions change depending on the issue. Other Terminology A variety of terms is used to describe positions on animal issues. These include animal protection, animal advocacy, and animal liberation. ââ¬Å"Animal protectionâ⬠and ââ¬Å"animal advocacyâ⬠are usually understood to include both animal rights and animal welfare. Both terms embody the belief that animals should be protected and deserve some moral consideration. ââ¬Å"Animal liberationâ⬠is usually used to describe an animal rights position, which would oppose any uses of animals for human purposes.

A Real Career Opportunity in the Criminal Justice Field Essay
A Real Career Opportunity in the Criminal Justice Field - Essay Example There are many responsibilities of a real Crime Scene Investigator and it is not, always, like the ones you have seen on television. They have a very relevant and serious position to hold. They are expected to, generally, be available and on-call at all hours, 24 hours a day, when necessary. After all, crime scenes do not necessarily occur between the normal business hours of a typical work day. à They must aid detectives in securing the evidence from contamination, reconstructing events, gathering evidence, photographs, and making certain thatà the evidence collected is sent to the correct locations for examination and analysis. A Crime Scene Investigator is, also, required to have strong communication skills, ability to remain composed, and a heightened sense of organization. They are, on occasion, asked to testify in court should the cases they are involved with go to trial. Becoming a Crime Scene Investigator requires a background in criminal justice is important and further education.. However, finding the training needed is available at a large number of schools, as the popularity of the field increased over the last decade. à A Bachelors Degree is attainable and with so much potential growth the education is abundantly worthwhile. Crime Scene Investigation offers a promising income with room for increase and future growth. The United States average for the yearly earnings of Crime Scene Investigator is, approximately, $51,570, which averages to be, just shy of, $25 per hour. In fairness, a new, freshly graduated, CSI would make somewhat less, dependent upon location, with the potential of promotions, as well as, a greater income. The statistics show that there are anticipated career opportunities as a Crime Scene Investigator, along with other positions within the forensic science fields, that will increase, at least, 19% between 2010 and 2020.("Forensic science technicians," 2012) This offers a lot of potential for current students within the fie ld that there is the likelihood that after they have graduated there will still be a steady demand for those graduates with these skills. In this troubled economic time and the continuing United States unemployment crisis, which many people are still suffering through, a future with continuing growth and opportunity is encouraging. There is, also, another advantage to entering the field during its heightened popularity, is that the field will change as technology and the sciences change. Participating in the field now is a wonderful chance to be involved in those changes and possess the most current, advanced, and needed skills within the field. Granted, that Crime Scene Investigation has a lot to offer as a career, but it does have one, particular, negative element that is its only real drawback.

Loitering in Terms of the Criminal Law Assignment
Loitering in Terms of the Criminal Law - Assignment Example The assignment "Loitering in Terms of the Criminal Law" talks about the first amendment of the constitution that refers to the loitering and protects the due process clause "freedom to loiter for innocent purposes". In enactment of the ordinance proscribing loitering, it was intended that gangs were prevented from possessing dominion, over the public streets. Liability will only set in if an individual disobeys an order by a law enforcement officer, to disperse when asked to. As per the ordinance, the police have a duty of care to the residents, of maintaining peace and dispersing groups of individuals who inhibit it. Individuals must be protected from these gangs, as they induce fear to the extent that they are forced to remain indoors. In addition, they should be protected from threats, by these persons, which remain in one place without an apparent purpose, as they watch the residentsââ¬â¢ movements and attack them at an opportune time. The USA Patriot Act was established, to curb and punish acts of terrorism and enhance law enforcement. Initially, the act dealt with international terrorism acts. However, domestic terrorism was added to the definition of terrorism. As provided in section 802 of the act. Any act that endangered human life, was a form of domestic terrorism. Despite criticisms on the provisions of the act, it provided determent against terrorism at the best interest of the citizens, if the terrorists actions, were intended to guide governmentââ¬â¢s policy, by intimidation or coercion.... tained, so as to help in supporting, conducting or concealing an act of terrorism and more so, if the property is derived from, involved in, or used to commit an act of terrorism. An assertion of a probability, of believing that an individual or an entity has committed terrorism against the country, residents or their property; calls for action and as such, any provision permitting the government to curb and punish such acts is not unconstitutional. If a person negligently fails to perform his duty of care, he/ she will be liable for damages. However, the plaintiff ought to prove beyond reasonable doubt, that he suffered loss as a result of the defendantââ¬â¢s negligence. Secondly, he must prove that he was within the scope of that duty, and lastly, prove that there was breach of duty, and as such, fair and reasonable to impose liability. The state statute will be held void for vagueness if it fails to justify the three conditions (Scheb, 2011). Courts are justified by all means, to impose a requirement that prosecutors prove the defendantââ¬â¢s intent to escape. Escape is the voluntary departure from custody. It is justified as escape, if without permission, the defendant, voluntarily leaves custody with intent to avoid confinement. Prosecution must prove that the defendant had no intent to leave and not to return. As such, intent would be held as proof of the crime of escape. In addition, the prosecution can bring forth evidence of threats and violence, as the cause for the action taken, which the jury considers. Asian Art Essay Example for Free
Asian Art Essay Folk arts in Azerbaijan have a long and interesting history. Works of art made from metal extracted from Nakhichevan, Migachevir, Gadanay, Gandja and other places are approximately 5000 years old. Crockery, weapons and adornments found here are not historical facts alone, but valuable sources which testify the skills of the master. Different pictures, scraped on housing implements made from copper, bronze, gold and adornments, prove existence of fine art in Azerbaijan since ancient times. Carpets were made by several separate carpet-making schools of Azerbaijan (Guba, Baku, Shirvan, Gandja, Gazakh, Nagorny Karabakh, Tabriz) in different periods. Bhutanese art Bhutanese art is similar to the art of Tibet. Both are based upon Vajrayana Buddhism, with its pantheon of divine beings. The major orders of Buddhism in Bhutan are Drukpa Kagyu and Nyingma. The former is a branch of the Kagyu School and is known for paintings documenting the lineage of Buddhist masters and the 70 Je Khenpo (leaders of the Bhutanese monastic establishment). The Nyingma order is known for images of Padmasambhava, who is credited with introducing Buddhism into Bhutan in the 7th century. According to legend, Padmasambhava hid sacred treasures for future Buddhist masters, especially Pema Lingpa, to find. The treasure finders (terton) are also frequent subjects of Nyingma art. Each divine being is assigned special shapes, colors, and/or identifying objects, such as lotus, conch-shell, thunderbolt, and begging bowl. All sacred images are made to exact specifications that have remained remarkably unchanged for centuries. Bhutanese art is particularly rich in bronzes of different kinds that are collectively known by the name Kham-so (made in Kham) even though they are made in Bhutan, because the technique of making them was originally imported from the eastern province of Tibet called Kham. Wall paintings and sculptures, in these regions, are formulated on the principal ageless ideals of Buddhist art forms. Even though their emphasis on detail is derived from Tibetan models, their origins can be discerned easily, despite the profusely embroidered garments and glittering ornaments with which these figures are lavishly covered. In the grotesque world of demons, the artists apparently had a greater freedom of action than when modeling images of divine beings. Buddhist art Buddhist art originated on the Indian subcontinent following the historical life of Siddhartha Gautama, 6th to 5th century BC, and thereafter evolved by contact with other cultures as it spread throughout Asia and the world. Buddhist art followed believers as the dharma spread, adapted, and evolved in each new host country. It developed to the north through Central Asia and into Eastern Asia to form the Northern branch of Buddhist art, and to the east as far as Southeast Asia to form the Southern branch of Buddhist art. In India, Buddhist art flourished and even influenced the development of Hindu art, until Buddhism nearly disappeared in India around the 10th century due in part to the vigorous expansion of Islam alongside Hinduism. Burmese contemporary art Burma (Myanmar) is a country in Southeast Asia which has endured isolation for the last four decades. It is also a country with deep rooted Buddhist beliefs. The contemporary art scene in the country reflects these facts, and the art is often related to Buddhism and the difficult socio-political situation. In this age of globalization, Burmese contemporary art has developed rather on its own terms. Chinese Art Chinese art has varied throughout its ancient history, divided into periods by the ruling dynasties of China and changing technology. Great philosophers, teachers, religious figures and even political leaders have influenced different forms of art. Chinese art encompasses fine arts, folk arts and performance arts. Eastern Art Eastern art history is devoted to the arts of the Far East and includes a vast range of influences from various cultures and religions. The emphasis is on art history amongst many diverse cultures in Asia. Developments in Eastern art historically parallel those in Western art, in general a few centuries earlier. African art, Islamic art, Indian art, Chinese art, and Japanese art each had significant influence on Western art, and, vice-versa. Indian art Indian Art is the art produced on the Indian subcontinent from about the 3rd millennium BC to modern times. To viewers schooled in the Western tradition, Indian art may seem overly ornate and sensuous; appreciation of its refinement comes only gradually, as a rule. Voluptuous feeling is given unusually free expression in Indian culture. A strong sense of design is also characteristic of Indian art and can be observed in its modern as well as in its traditional forms. Persian art The Iranian cultural region consisting of the modern nations of Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and surrounding regions is home to one of the richest art heritages in world history and encompasses many disciplines including architecture, painting, weaving, pottery, calligraphy, metalworking and stone masonry.

Consuming Kids (summary) :: essays research papers fc
Technology & Society (HUM110-80) CONSUMING KIDS Summary on Article, ââ¬Å"Pubic Attitudes Toward the Youth Marketing Industry & Its Impact on Childrenâ⬠ââ¬Å"Few public opinion polls exist concerning the burgeoning youth marketing industry. We therefore conducted an online survey of 978 U.S. residents in the Spring of 2004. Results suggest that a large majority of respondents believe: a) that the youth marketing industry is harmful to children and has questionable ethical practices: b) that the industry contributes to a variety of problems common in youth: c) that most of the marketing which takes place in schools is unacceptable: and d) that marketing directed at children under 8 years of age should be prohibitedâ⬠, (Kasser and Linn). This survey was born out of concern that there are few statistics on the effects of marketing industryââ¬â¢s impact on our youth. Just as the article on ââ¬Å"Consuming Kidsâ⬠raises awareness about children being lured into believing they canââ¬â¢t live without things and the problems rising out of it. This survey makes us aware of how this market is willing to sacrifice the sanctity of family life by undermining the parents via their television while children watch mega hours of uninterrupted commercials aimed at them. These surveys were compared with a couple of sparsely completed other ones. The respondents felt that problems such as: aggressiveness, materialism, obesity, lack of creativity, overly sexualized behavior and self-esteem, were detrimentally influenced by the youth marketing industry. The solutions were simple enough, over half believed that schools should be commercial free zones, childrenââ¬â¢s television should be commercial free, (PBS has it), marketing to children should be subject to more government oversight, marketing to children 12 and under should be prohibited. There has got to be a stemming of the tide of the marketing industry exploiting children at such young ages. The survey results suggested the marketing industryââ¬â¢s is compromising its ethics for sales, is potentially harmful, needs regulation, the school should not be the place to market their products, even though the schools say it is helping them financially.

I therefore encourage entrepreneurs to venture into this type of enterprise because there is ready and available market. Amanda Smith Kimberly Boone English 1101 March 4, 2013 The causes for the popularity of fast food restaurantsIn the current industrialized and technologically developed global village, there is hardly any time between packed schedules for preparing food. The struggle for better living standards, batter health care, better education, and self actualization are the motivational needs. These are some of the Maslow motivation hypothesis. It is this hypothesis that has forced people to have an inner drive for better things in life. As a result of this, human beings are so occupied such that there is little or no time for preparing food either for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.People resor t to restaurants offering fast foods. As a result of the increased number of customers requiring the services of fast foods; a number of entrepreneurs are diverting their investments in this venture. There is growing popularity of fast food restaurants (Clutter, David and Edward). Owing to the busy schedule, people have no time to venture to prepare variety of dishes. Women cannot spare the time to learn how to make varied dishes for the family. The bigger role is played by restaurants. These restaurants prepare a variety of recipes to choose. These foods are delicious. It draws customers to continue frequenting because of the delicious foods. This makes the restaurant popular as a customer will invite other customers to the same place and hence the restaurant becomes popular. Therefore, the types of food that prepared boost the popularity. Nowadays, we see many restaurants striving to cook varied kinds of foods. They do so in order to increase the popularity. There cater for differe nt type segment of the market hence customers are diverse and able to get any food needed (Kuzop, John and Elizabeth).Fast food restaurant come into play an enormous role in being convenient to offer fast foods. In doing so, they go as far as offering fast food that is delicious, affordable, in a hygienic environment by the best services. Therefore, the standards of living are extremely rising up. This is as a result of the advancement in technology and modernisation. This is added by the economic instability facing most countries of the world. The hard economic times that are looming in the global economy people are resorting cheap and affordable food for their up keep.Owing to this, fast food restaurants are turning to being popular since they offer food that is cheap. With only a few dollars, one can get a snack that satisfying and serve the purpose of the day after all the stomach only needs tricking to sustain the day. The fast food restaurants offer a lot of diverse meals at e xtremely low cost, which cause many people to select these restaurants as their most excellent alternative (Clutter, David and Edward). In order to cope up with stiff competition, managers employ human resource strategies in selecting the best candidates to work in restaurants. It is because of this reason that there is excellent customer service. The employees working in fast food restaurant are customer friendly, respond quickly, and attend to any issue. They go a step further and inform the customer on the varieties of food available and their nutritional contents. It is from here that the customer chooses from the many options offered based on the price of that food. All these services available promote the popularity of that restaurant because customers will go spreading the good services offered there (Clutter, David and Edward). The most expensive human capital is the personal health. People follow the preventive measure than cure and as a result, they look for clean restaurant s to purchase food. The cleanliness condition in fast food restaurants is a factor that remains observing. Majority of these restaurants owing to aggressive competition and public health regulations maintain hygienic environments. Human being by nature attract to clean and attractive surroundings. Clean restaurants attract customers, and the positive consequences are that the popularity of the restaurant will increase. This is because more and more customers will flow to the clean and attractive place (Kuzop, John and Elizabeth). Market scrutiny and analysis is a strategy that most business entities or embracing. In order to enter into a market segment and remain at the top, advertising and promotion is one of techniques to adopt. Restaurants employ these techniques. They put adverts on radio, TV, magazine, and billboards. The effect of this is that persuading customers and in the long run may change their perception towards the restaurant. It is through here that food restaurants gai n popularity since customers know the food (Kuzop, John and Elizabeth). As a result, the popularity of fast food restaurant depends on the aggressiveness of the management and mostly the sales and marketing team. Also the employeeââ¬â¢s competence on customer care handling. When all t work harmoniously, the restaurant will cut a competitive edge in the market since it will receive customersââ¬â¢ day in day out. Fast food restaurants play an important role in assisting the population in providing them with needed services. This in turn amounts to boosting the countryââ¬â¢s economy indirectly. Media Influence on Stereotypes
What you see is not always what you get In a society highly influenced by the media, stereotypes are used sometimes in a comedic way. In Harold and Kumar go to White Castle one of the main themes the movie is poking fun at is how stereotypes affect the lives of the two main characters one being of Korean decent and the other Indian. The movie opens introducing the first character Harold. The audience sees that he is an Asian male working in a cubicle for a banking company. The scene turns to Haroldââ¬â¢s co-workers who are both white in an office that is nicer and bigger to that of Harold, discussing how they are going to have fun and party for the weekend when one of them has much work to do, so one of them suggests having someone else do it. The scene gives the impression that the two white co-workers are the main characters of the movie as the introductory scene shows primarily the two co-workers and have the most dialogue in the brief intro; however, later the audience will not ice that they are not seen again until the end of the movie. What this scene is shown to do is to make humor out of a normalized stereotype of the Asian American group. As this scene will be analyzed, the normalized stereotypes of Asians in society is highly recognizable in American culture and media, as it negatively privileges the Asian group while obscuring Americans insecurity of their own part in society. In todayââ¬â¢s world most people are born with an identity already established for them. Generalized perceptions or a stereotype of a single group has instigated prejudice. With cultural representations already determined by the outside world, many strive to break such representations in order to form their own identity and not what was given to them. It has increasingly more difficult for one to break such representation due to factors in society normalizing these representations with the use of the media. The media has become a powerful tool in promoting such representation of groups. Stereotypes surround the whole world we live in and are unavoidable. No matter what we do, depending on our personality, attire, or even our hairstyle everyone fits into some sort of stereotype even by a little. The definition of a stereotype is a standardized conception or idea of a group of people (Hurst). Even though most stereotypes arenââ¬â¢t true there is a reason why they exist and continue to thrive. Stereotypes have flourished continually as the world has become more and more globalized. Especially in the United States one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world. As stereotypes exist they have consequently affected the way that a particular individual or group lives in society. One particular representation that will be analyzed is the stereotypes of Asians in popular media, the movie Harold and Kumar go to White Castle and along with my own personal experiences being in the group within Asian Stereotypes will be used to assess the topic. Back at the beginning of this paper an introductory scene was described of the film Harold and Kumar go to White Castle. Even though the scene is only about a few minutes many representations can be noted. The scene implements key normalized stereotypes seen in the public eye. The particular stereotype of Asian group has been connected to the term ââ¬Å"Model Minorityâ⬠which applies positive traits as a stereotype. The traits include qualities such as being hardworking, intelligent, studious, productive, and also inoffensive people. Also known to increase their social status through merit. The biggest opposition to the view is that it exaggerates the success of Asians. This false empowerment given by the stereotype covers up true problems that are faced by the Asian community. The belief that Asians are harder workers and thus leading to higher earning jobs has led to a more difficult level of climbing the work ladder into higher wage jobs, otherwise known as the glass ceiling phenomen a: The definition ââ¬Å"The Glass Ceilingâ⬠refers to an invisible barrier that limits the level to which a woman or another member of a demographic minority can advance within the hierarchy in an organization. It often is a barrier that confronts Ethnic Americans in addition to women when trying to reach upper management levels in many companies (Hester, 2007)Corresponding to the glass ceiling phenomena, the model minority stereotype has been believed to been the cause that Asians must acquire more education and work more hours than their white counterparts to earn the same amount of money. We will go back to the same scene mentioned at the beginning and continue. The scene described before shows Harold the Korean descendent character working tenaciously in his cubicle filling out forms and papers and he is then approached by the two co-workers mentioned earlier that were contemplating how they are going to party over the weekend when they have work to do.Afterwards it shows the two co-workers giving Harold a pile of their papers and folders then persuading Harold to do the work for them with Harold then unenthusiastically accepting the task. Afterwards the scene shows the two co-workers in this short dialogue Co-worker 1: ââ¬Å"Wow! That was amazing; I canââ¬â¢t believe how easy that wasâ⬠Co-worker 2: ââ¬Å"Dude, how do you think I get all my shit done? Those Asian guys just love crunching numbers. You probably just made his weekend. (Both leave laughing)Then the camera pans over to Harold as he shouts ââ¬Å"Fuck! â⬠The co-workers connect the traits of the stereotype to what they just did and sarcastically believe they did Harold a favor. What can be shown here in relation to the model minority stereotype is that Harold now has to do more work than is required of him for his white counterparts. However doing this extra work will not earn him more money or any merit while his white counterpart will be doing less work and receiving the same credit as Harold is.The dialogue shows that the co-workers jokingly believe they are doing Harold a favor due to his traits which allows him to do such tasks; however, the ending of the scene shows Harold shouting ââ¬Å"Fuck! â⬠which can be seen as epitomizing reaction of Asians frustrations towards how this stereotype has affected them. The scene shows rebellion towards the label of the model minority. This shows that even though the model minority label credits Asians with strong qualities in the end negatively affects them. What does the scene show about the white co-workers? The scene shows the co-workers of Harold irresponsibly passing off their work for someone else to do. This characteristic shows laziness in the white co-workers. This part of the scene was a way to laugh at both Harold and also the two white co-workers. Why was this funny? The thing is that itââ¬â¢s sometimes true that these kinds of situations occur that is where the audience connects the humo r in the situation. The scene reveals an abnormal of how Americans are usually viewed.Americans have been known to be hard workers through fighting for freedom through the revolution to rising to one of the most powerful countries of the 20th century. Time goes on being on top, strong qualities can be seen to be fading away. The polarity is seen as Harold the Korean is hard working while the white co-workers are not. In the scene the white co-workers are laughing away semi-sadistically as they leave the building after taking advantage of their Asian co-worker. The significance of this is that the laughing disguises the white co-workers insecurity of their own work ethic is not as strong.Using the model minority stereotype has in a way been used to exploit as shown in the scene with the white co-workers using the stereotype to use Harold as a work horse. Even though the two white co-workers canââ¬â¢t represent Americans it can represent a whole different stereotype to be uncovered America has had a history in dealing with Asians in the past. Around the 19th century a term known as the ââ¬Å"Yellow Perilâ⬠developed as a fear to the increasing number of Asians would immigrate to the United States and would fill the country with foreign culture, speech, and even take away jobs from Americans. The fear that the hard working Asians would take away Americanââ¬â¢s position in the working world, a satire to the response of that fear is shown in the scene as it shows Harold has been used as a crutch to hold up the co-workers in power. In Amitava Kumarââ¬â¢s Language, a violent example is seen when Kumar describes the murder of Vincent Chin who was murdered by two white autoworkers in Detroit. During so he was called a ââ¬Å"Japâ⬠and told ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s because of you motherfuckers that weââ¬â¢re out of work. â⬠(p. 05, Critical Encounters With Text). Chin was murdered due to his ethnic identity which in some correlation was believed to p ut those auto workers out of work. Chin was murdered because in the view of the autoworkers was that he was somehow associated with the ethnic group that had replaced them. It could be that the people who replaced them were more efficient, harder working, or demanded lower wages. Whatever it was, they did not confront the face they themselves had anything to do with the fact they were out of work.Which is something that has become a problem in society is that people blame each other and do not choose to confront how they could have caused a certain event. The model minority stereotype has also affected my life personally being of Korean decent. Being part of the model minority stereotypes has caused to build expectations since we are expected to live up to our peers which fall into that category. In elementary school, I remember asking my teachers for help and noticed some reluctance in doing so. Then I saw my teachers helping other students seeming more inclined to help. This situat ion made it seem to me that I had to work a little harder than my peers in school. In high school, some teachers took personal offence if it seemed as I underperformed on an assignment believing I wasnââ¬â¢t trying or was being lazy. Even though if I tried hard and didnââ¬â¢t do well it was disappointing to see teachers lose faith due to a misinterpretation. All of these things were built upon the general assumptions brought on by the model minority stereotype, has made it so it was abnormal to not follow the trend of such a view.Assumptions are natural impulses that most cannot avoid to do. As human beings no matter what we see, there is some sort of impression that most of us come towards even without knowing the person. Some of these assumptions are guided from varying reasons including friends, family, face, hair, ethnicity, attire, gender, and the media. We analyzed how a particular scene in the film Harold and Kumar go to White Castle exemplifies a generalized assumption . Also a brief personal account on how the stereotype has affected me.Stereotypes create unfairness as it classifies groups based on assumptions. Awareness of the consequences of stereotypes will help the problems associated with it. Stereotypes will continue to die down as long as the world is becoming more and more globalized. So therefore groups and cultures in America will become more connected with each other as time goes on causing familiarity, bringing down assumptions on a group and with this the concept, true equal opportunity will continue to become stronger.Works Cited Jon Hurwitz, Danny Leiner, Hayden Schlossberg . THE CRAB essays
THE CRAB essays Evolution, there has been continous discussion about this subject. Until the time of Darwin, over 130 years ago, most scientists commonaly considered the living animals and humans to be the evidence of one divine creator; God. However, Darwin claimed that the apes are the ancestors of the humans, which is accepted as evolution, and since then the scientists, religous comunities and the people, who have different thoughts about evolution, are trying to find out which one is correct. Are we descendants of apes or not? This question and the nonsense race between the two arrogant groups to justify their thoughts seem to be last forever. Although there are some similarities between humans and apes, like walking up-right on two feet and toolmaking, the differences such us anatomical structure, language conceptual and genetics are the points that the anty-Darwinists stress on. The scientists have identified some modulation in human evolutionary history. The development of the two-legged walking is one of the major similarities. Standing up-right in an environment gives them the chance to scan the horizon for predators or let them use their hands in order to carry something around. The second major similarity is tool making. The invention of tool making has occurred approximately 2,5 million years ago. Both of apes and humanlike creatures have used the stones and bones in order to get food. That act was particularly to make the stones and other objects handy rather than just finding useful ones. In their article Up From The Apes which published in Time Magazine Michael D. Lemonick and Andrea Dorfman informs that the invention of toolmaking - the purposeful craftsmen on stone implements rather than just picking up handy rocks - and the transition to meat eating (pg, 26, Time, August 23, 1999) However, hominids were able to devise more sophisticated and diverse tools rather than apes that ...

Biotechnology
Biotechnology Essay The welfare and development of todays student-athlete is central to the administration of Big Ten Conference intercollegiate athletics. Providing opportunity for young men and women to mature in a wholesome and healthy way is critically important to our universities. A commitment exists at all levels of our universities to providing the resources to support the welfare of Big Ten student-athletes. At the 1996 NCAA Convention, the Division I membership debated a number of issues related to financial assistance for student-athletes. Limitations on Pell Grants, stipends awarded by the federal government for educational purposes, were removed. Discussions took place, and continue to occur, on ways to liberalize rules on how student-athletes can earn money from work done during the off-season. Around the same time, the NCAA Executive Committee increased the annual funding of the special assistance fund from $3 million to $10 million. Big Ten institutions provide more than 6,400 young men and women opportunities to play on 250 intercollegiate teams. These young people receive more than $42 million annually from Big Ten institutions in grants-in-aid (tuition, room and board, books). While receiving the opportunity for a world-class education, they compete with and against some of the finest amateur athletes in the country. Needy student-athletes in the Big Ten may receive up to $2,000 annually above the value of their grant-in-aid via federal aid and are eligible for cash payments from the special assistance fund for items like clothing, emergency trips home and other special needs. Big Ten universities also assist student-athletes in identifying summer employment opportunities, career placement and catastrophic-injury insurance plans. They also assist with a $1 million insurance plan that financially protects student-athletes with professional sports aspirations in the event they suffer a disabling injury. Today, the system that served so many so well and for so long is being called into question by the media, the public and even by some coaches and student-athletes. They assert that some student-athletes in football and basketball should be paid for their participation. They believe that the market forces that drive professional sports, or any other private-sector activity, should provide the controlling principle for the relationship between the student-athlete and the university. This issue of financial assistance for student-athletes is critical to defining and examining the relationship between intercollegiate athletics and higher education as we approach the 21st century. While we must be open to novel approaches and new ideas, paying student-athletes to play is not supportable within the context of Big Ten intercollegiate athletics now or in the future. In my view, revenues derived from intercollegiate athletics are the sole property of the institution and should be expended in support of the broadest array of mens and womens educational and athletics opportunities. Thus, revenues are earned in private-sector activity and spent within the confines of the university for appropriate educational purposes. Some critics of college athletics cite the economic and educational exploitation of the student-athletes who participate in our major revenue sports as a major flaw in the system. We believe the educational and the lifetime economic benefits associated with a university education are the appropriate quid pro quo for any Big Ten student-athlete, regardless of the sport. For many decades, Big Ten intercollegiate athletics has been funded largely by revenues from mens basketball and football programs. This situation is not likely to change in the foreseeable future. Our institutions have sponsored sports programs that enabled outstanding athletes such as Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Red Grange, Archie Griffin, John Havlicek and Dick Butkus (the list is endless) to obtain an education and play their sport, in turn providing resources for educational and athletics opportunities for such people as Suzy Favor, Jesse Owens, Mark Spitz and Jack Nicklaus. Under this system, people like John Wooden and Gerald Ford played alongside student-athletes much less famous, but equally deserving of an intercollegiate athletics experience. Intercollegiate athletics has provided, and will continue to provide, opportunities for social mobility through education for future generations of young men and women. We must ensure that all young people admitted to our universities are prepared to compete academically so that the overall student-athlete academic outcomes are compatible with their peers within the general student population. Recent efforts to raise NCAA initial-eligibility standards are attempts to counter the argument that unprepared student-athletes are being admitted and then exploited for their athletics contributions. Ten mens basketball and football events and more than 300 million Americans watch these sports on television. Ticket and television revenues derived from those sources are shared among our members so that each university can sponsor the .

Because it is too long so i wrote in the report format - Essay Example This report has thus evaluated the factors that influence the decision of the organisation to hire a German engineer to help increase its car modelling and production. This is a sound idea but a number of factors arising from international human resource management must be considered and given due consideration. This paper finally advices on the best approach that the organisation should steps to help reduce the financial expenses that may arise from this decision. Introduction Background information The process of recruiting and posting of staffs is a major concern in international human resource management to organizations that operate beyond their domestic borders. Recruitment involves the process of searching for and obtaining potential job candidates in a good number and with different qualities so as to enable the organization chose the individual with the best skills. Recruitment for multinationals presents many challenges to organization due to the operational differences tha t exist in different countries around the globe. ... Ethnocentric, polycentric, regiocentric and geocentric staffing orientations are quite common in international human resource management. This decision to recruit a German foreigner thus means that the organization has adopted the use of foreign expatriates to occupy a number of positions in the organizations (Deresky, 2010). The success of such a policy is influenced by a number of factors which include the work visa and the immigration rules of the country. Aims of the study This report will thus evaluate the major issues that will arise and that requires consideration by the organisation in their quest to employ a German national as the engineer to help improve the car production business. It will thus analyse the visa issues and remuneration issues that will be considered by the organization before making this decision. As a foreigner, the company will have to implement an induction program to help familiarize the employee with the work culture of the country and how he can live comfortably in the country with his family members despite the cultural differences. The report shall thus analyse how such a condition will affect the companyââ¬â¢s financial and human resource position. Scope of the study In completing this task and achieving the desired aims of this study, the Australian system shall be analysed in line with the emigration and the labour laws of the country.
